And because they know more about this than I do... I will quote their explanation here:
There’s a house in south Minneapolis that happens to be occupied by three people: 2 guys with various ideas and random talents, and a girl who happens to be a skilled photographer. They’ve all been friends for quite some time now and they got to thinking… how in the world can we bring people together and make something that the whole community can enjoy? Well, if you’ve ever been to Minnesota in the summertime then you know that there are yard sales all over the place, every weekend, rain or shine. It’s a common link, for whatever reason, but it’s awesome.
Now, for the art part (otherwise known as the “not so common link”). We know local artists, we watched them grow like wee little seeds in the ground, just kidding but honestly we know a few and they know a few, etc. etc. The problem with art sometimes is that it either lacks the community base to get people involved in the first place, or it has such a high following surrounding the galleries and exhibitions that it almost seems impossible to get in, or even know where/how to get into it. So, we figured, why not start from the one place we know best… our own back yard, literally. It’s a free gallery space, for anyone that wants to participate (within reason, after all it is a backyard although it is quite large).
The whole point of this entire summer long Y’Art Sale is to get our artistic friends involved in something that they don’t need to feel intimidated by, to feel at home showing what they already know they do best – without the critic’s eye casting a shadow upon them. This is truly what we feel art needs to be: comfortable but limitless. The more that people support this, the more it will grow. We have no longterm goal, but just want to see what happens with each weekend as more and more people get involved. Hopefully, at some point, we can have enough momentum to move to other venues (studio spaces, concerts, block parties) and the options are somewhat limitless.
What can one expect at a Y’Art sale? It’s not just art… but regular ol’ garage sale items too, and at some point, food/music/workshops and anything else that people feel they can bring to the event. This is a no holds barred type of thing. Our short-term goal? Throw a block party for National Night Out in early August – not your typical potluck style, but a bash of sorts. This won’t happen if people don’t support the weekly events.
To find out more just simply show up. Check out the event page on FaceBook with the same heading, “Minneapolis Y’art Sale” to find the home address… one can also email either Erik or Spencer at minneapolisyartsale@gmail.com
