surprise outside the gas station
i have suffered from fairly severe insomnia my entire life. i know that if i think back... it's been happening to me since i was very small. back then it was often because i didn't want to miss out on something... i hated "bedtime" and "naps"... i was never as tired as i was supposed to be... and i would lay there staring at the ceiling... counting dots... or bothering my sister. now that i am older... i actually love to sleep... but still... my brain takes over... often times when i am upset or frustrated.... or as has been the case this week... worked up about an art show... i wake up at 3:30 or 4 in the morning and can't shut my brain off... i actually think this is more of a blessing than a curse. it seems that my brain controls how tired it allows my body to be. if i were in a survival situation... i could lead you out of the jungle for a good 3 or 4 days straight... without much rest... i know this. so... i sort of enjoy it when i realize it's happening now. aside from the extra coffee consumption and the tired eyes... i am pretty much the same. only a lot more productive and focused. it'll all calm down next week i'm sure.

last night danny and i finished up the last of our show prep and everything looks great!
i think at last count there are something like 52 pieces between the two of us!
you might have to wear your short shorts... the forecast says 91 and sunny! whew!
thankfully there will be ice cream!

Ode to a Nightingale

Forlorn! the very word is like a bell
To toll me back from thee to my sole self!
Adieu! the fancy cannot cheat so well
As she is famed to do, deceiving elf.
Adieu! adieu! thy plaintive anthem fades
Past the near meadows, over the still stream,
Up the hill-side; and now 'tis buried deep
In the next valley-glades:   Was it a vision, or a waking dream?
Fled is that music:—do I wake or sleep?

I think in themes.... groups... colors... and imagine my surprise when searching for a painting last night online... that google now has a cool new feature.... you can google any subject.... and in the lower right corner on the images tab.... you can group them by color.... i had a lot of fun seeing things from years ago... old paintings... old blog posts.... and photographs.... all grouped together that way. So... here's a little rainbow of images... and songs... for fun... because after all... that's what this is all about...

Do your actions mention, your heart's intentions?
Is your mind mistaken? Is your conscience not at ease?
Do you strive to deny each kindred spirit in the room?
And is your highest pleasure now, the misfortune of fools?
You hide nothing
Just believe it
We all see it
In the basement, you did wait,
Wondering what they would do,
And you could not accept the fate of three thousand volts through you
And there is nothing you could say,
Only what you should have done
And you should have walked away
Instead you're living on the run
Now it's coming off the sea
And it's moving through the trees
It is the wind before your hand
As its coming down upon me

You hide nothing
Just believe it
We all see it

I found out about Yart through my friend Kristina Perkins... and her friend Erik Jahn.
There is a blog/website set up for Yart here also: http://minneapolisyartsale.com/about/
And because they know more about this than I do... I will quote their explanation here:

There’s a house in south Minneapolis that happens to be occupied by three people: 2 guys with various ideas and random talents, and a girl who happens to be a skilled photographer. They’ve all been friends for quite some time now and they got to thinking… how in the world can we bring people together and make something that the whole community can enjoy? Well, if you’ve ever been to Minnesota in the summertime then you know that there are yard sales all over the place, every weekend, rain or shine. It’s a common link, for whatever reason, but it’s awesome.

Now, for the art part (otherwise known as the “not so common link”). We know local artists, we watched them grow like wee little seeds in the ground, just kidding but honestly we know a few and they know a few, etc. etc. The problem with art sometimes is that it either lacks the community base to get people involved in the first place, or it has such a high following surrounding the galleries and exhibitions that it almost seems impossible to get in, or even know where/how to get into it. So, we figured, why not start from the one place we know best… our own back yard, literally. It’s a free gallery space, for anyone that wants to participate (within reason, after all it is a backyard although it is quite large).

The whole point of this entire summer long Y’Art Sale is to get our artistic friends involved in something that they don’t need to feel intimidated by, to feel at home showing what they already know they do best – without the critic’s eye casting a shadow upon them. This is truly what we feel art needs to be: comfortable but limitless. The more that people support this, the more it will grow. We have no longterm goal, but just want to see what happens with each weekend as more and more people get involved. Hopefully, at some point, we can have enough momentum to move to other venues (studio spaces, concerts, block parties) and the options are somewhat limitless.

What can one expect at a Y’Art sale? It’s not just art… but regular ol’ garage sale items too, and at some point, food/music/workshops and anything else that people feel they can bring to the event. This is a no holds barred type of thing. Our short-term goal? Throw a block party for National Night Out in early August – not your typical potluck style, but a bash of sorts. This won’t happen if people don’t support the weekly events.

To find out more just simply show up. Check out the event page on FaceBook with the same heading, “Minneapolis Y’art Sale” to find the home address… one can also email either Erik or Spencer at minneapolisyartsale@gmail.com

i made this

for a couple of years i was obsessed with the x-files... david duchovny and all things paranormal... it was during that time... i would plop myself down in front of the tv every sunday evening and watch not one but 2 hours of the x-files... i'm not much for tv in general and i rarely follow a series but this particular one had a hold on me from the start... after they would roll credits... i believe fox or whomever produced it... (i have no idea if that's true) ... would roll a short ID spot afterward.... it would cue up the sound of a projector for 3 seconds and then a little kid would say "i made this"... i am a creature of habit... and i made a habit of always pretending to do something else or think about something else... and then just as the little kid would shout "i made this" so would i... a stupid little thing to do... but one that is permanently etched in my brain. for some reason that phrase keeps running through my head... in that stupid little kid voice lately.

in a related incident i recently hung a nike ad on my wall... "You are entirely up to you. Make your Body. Make your Life. Make Yourself."  - at first glance it looks just like an self help phrase plopped up to bolster confidence... but I like it for other reasons... it hangs haphazardly on a wall next to some of my own art... and a favorite photograph of a doll head with a snake coming out of one eye... i like the way we write our stories... the way they look from the inside out... and how... like a good book, they are fun to leaf through and reminisce. i like my story. i even like the boring parts... the parts that go on for paragraphs without much action... mostly i like that it is still being written... and i don't know how it ends.

i stole 5 hours this morning for myself... and 2 or so last night... my eyes are confusing me lately... i feel like they are playing tricks... i can never tell if my glasses help me when i am painting or not... so i keep taking them off and putting them back on... which is probably adding to the confusion...

turns out even glasses can't help me paint a nose... although this one is supposed to look like that... they give me hours of endless frustration.
