So, a few months ago I had the pleasure of meeting the talented Mr . Thomas Maddux. If you know of Thomas, then I am sure you've heard of his band El Le Faunt and if you haven't I suggest you check this out: http://www.facebook.com/Ellefaunt
Thomas is one of the most enthusiastic people involved in the Minneapolis music scene lately... he's just as excited about discovering great musicians and helping them perform and record as he is about his own work. I personally find this inspiring. Last night I saw him perform in one of his other bands "The Broken Bicycles" : http://www.facebook.com/thebrokenbicycles they're charming and sweet... their songs are filled with clever lyrics like... "until the day we do we don't we almost kiss... one day with outstretched arms we reach and barely miss"... Turkeyes Laffity has a voice that carries this duo with only a uke for background instrumentation.
http://thebrokenbicycles.bandcamp.com/ they have a new cd out... my favorite track is "all my friends are alcoholics" ... they also do a ridiculously sunny version of "you are my sunshine"
Other musical highlights from last night include: Jason McLaughlin aka "I'm Not Dead, I'm Not A Robot" ... who's "I'm Tired of Being Quiet" could be an anthem for just about anyone that's ever created anything.... check it out.... http://imnotdeadimnotarobot.bandcamp.com/ and Josh Murphy of King Fish Crow http://www.facebook.com/pages/King-Fish-Crow/101173066624728
I also spent a long time talking to Cyn Collins about the West Bank and her book "West Bank Boogie- Forty Years of Music, Mayhem and Memories" ... turns out we share an appreciation for the people, places and music on the West Bank.... I am really excited to read her book!
As the night was winding down, I looked around and thought... wow I am surrounded by friendly people... the guys at Nick and Eddies, Cyn, Thomas and friends, Marcus popped in, Tomahawk... my friend Sharon! and others I don't know.. the place felt warm and comfortable ... a few of us stepped outside and Harmon was silent... snow falling in giant flakes... talking about science fiction and new life discovered on mars... I thought about something a good friend said to me years earlier... "if you're a person that loves good music, then good music just finds you..." .... i guess the same is true of good people
